Things are looking up, with Step Stools

Don’t let limited kitchen storage space get you down, more often than not, options open as we look up and tap into the full wall height. Just as we can plan for adequate shelving and storage solutions to keep our things accessible on the upper shelves, a step ladder or stool is another essential tool to give us easy access to those hard to reach places. So what do we do with our step stools to keep them handy while maintaining our kitchen’s sense of style?

Here are five ways to keep your step stool at the ready:

  1. Leave it out. When step stools are used by the whole family, for everything from hand-washing to cupboard access and even seating, keeping it out can be most practical.

  2. Skip the stool and instead use a sturdy, but light-weight chair. Admittedly our stool is in such high demand we frequently use one of our steel kitchen chairs as a back-up step ladder.

  3. Stash a folding step ladder against the wall. Free-standing or on a hook, there are many design-forward options you can keep handy, but out of the way.

  4. Store behind closed doors. If you have a narrow broom closet or another skinny cupboard, opt for an inexpensive folding utility stool from your local hardware store. Bring it out to access those hard to reach places.

  5. Design a built-in step stool. The possibilities are endless with custom designs. It can slide horizontally under the stove or in a narrow upright cupboard below the counter. Or simply leave a nook below the counter to custom fit your favourite stool. For a tall wall and a major statement, build a ladder into the design for easy access and a pulled together look.
